Leading Fulfilling Lives

My friend Jini and I are planning to do a presentation for IBM on the topic "Perspectives of the Young on Leading Fulfilling Lives". It is a contest but I don't think much of it as that. Honestly, I simply want to discover others' views on it and present my own definition as well.

Success is, indeed, relative to each person's values and desires. However I still believe that people leading fulfilling lives share common traits or perspectives. Some of these include: (a) valuing others and not only self (b) having a passion for life & continuous learning (c) being action-oriented (d) unafraid to make mistakes and even (e) finding the fun at work or any endeavor. This is what we can thoroughly investigate.

My own Definition of Fulfillment or Success

For me being fulfilled in life means NOT living in want. In a sense fulfillment means being contented; having fun while doing what you believe in. Hence, in my opinion, one significant ingredient to leading a fulfilling life is enjoying what you do.

Modern living has somewhat taken away laughter & cheers at work. Sadly, a lot of people live frustrated lives, which in my opinion, is the ultimate opposite of success.

Furthermore, another essential ingredient for one's fulfillment is having the heart to share whatever success or winnings you have achieved. This means sharing the blessings you received to your circle of influence, be it family, friends or the larger community. As one's fulfillment progresses and matures, one's circle also increases and you become better able to give as well as receive.

But then again, the circle of life goes on like a wheel and most often that not you realize, well, you're not always “up”. This makes the difference. Because for those who lead fulfilling lives: it is not the circumstance that define them, but it is their strong faith, determination and hope to act inspite of, that realizes their dream. Whether up, down or in the middle, they strive and continue “wheeling” along (always with a smile *wink*).

Qualities of Fulfilling Lives:

Feeling Alive - "All of your senses are engaged, energized, light, fully engaged in THIS moment, while looking forward to the next moment", "experiencing life and energy" feeling the pulse of life, and being aware of each moment", "authentic" - real and genuine - not forced or not made up". "That feeling of Mmmmmmm".

Satisfaction & Contentment & Peace - "Inner peace, calmness, tranquility and harmony", "peace internally, no matter what's happening externally", "warms the heart, fills the soul", "the feeling of enough" (even though we know there can always be more), "nothing else matters". "It's knowing that whatever you are doing - or being - is perfect right now".

Happiness & Joy - "Stuff that puts a smile on your face", "a happy heart and happy mind at the same time", "unencumbered bliss".

Fullness & Richness - "Fulfillment has a feeling of fullness, satiation, saturation", "It has a texture and depth to it. It is multi-dimensional", "a deeper sense of satisfaction and joy".

Spiritual Energy - There is a mystical element to fulfillment, as in experiencing a miracle of life (like the birth of a child, watching a sunset, or being in nature), "an energetic feel", "a feeling or knowing of a higher energy present and influencing the moment".

Alignment to Values and Purpose - Living, experiencing and honoring what's most important to you and your soul (which is living your values and purpose). This sense of fulfillment is uniquely different than joy. It's your core being satisfied at its deepest level. "It's living who you are - at the core", "living how you want to live in the moment", "purposeful and meaningful living, whether it's achieving a goal, satisfying a need, or purposefully enjoying the moment.

In a Perfectly Fulfilling Life, you will find it is...

Uniquely Your Own - What creates "perfect fulfillment" for one person, isn't necessarily the recipe for you. The core elements are similar.

Ever-Changing - A perfectly fulfilling life is a process that is ever-changing. What is fulfilling today, may not be fulfilling 10 years from now. Fulfillment is not static; it is constantly adjusting with our ever-changing life. Life creates new challenges and obstacles for us to navigate in every day - and it is in this process, that true fulfillment is born.

In the Present Moment - A re-occurring theme in each of the qualities above. Fulfillment isn't a memory from the past, or a vision in the future. Fulfillment is experienced in the present moment.

A Combination of "Big Things" and "Little Things" -Fulfillment isn't just a result of "BIG Things" happening in your life. "Little Things" contribute heavily to fulfillment. And, we need some BIG things too.

All Encompassing - Fulfillment is cultivated from every area of your life. Whether we like it or not, each area of our life influences the others - sometimes significantly and sometimes subtlety.
